Why grind instead of dig
Digging a stump out means an excavator, a crater and a pile of soil to replace. Grinding chews the wood down below ground level and leaves the hole filled with chips. It’s faster, cheaper and far less damage to the yard.
How deep we grind
- Standard: 4 to 8 inches below grade. Enough for lawn, bark dust or gravel.
- For replanting: 12 to 18 inches, so a new tree has room and isn’t fighting old wood.
- For concrete, a shed or a fence post: as deep as the project needs.
What you’re left with
A mound of wood chips mixed with soil, filling the hole. Most people rake them level and let them settle, or use them as mulch elsewhere in the yard. If you want them hauled off and the hole filled with topsoil, we can do that for an extra charge.
Two things worth knowing: wood chips tie up nitrogen as they break down, so don’t plant directly into fresh grindings, and surface roots beyond the stump decay on their own over a few years.
